Face the Facts: BB + CC Creams

BB and CC Creams

Beauty Editors and Trendsetters Alike Are Obsessed with BB Creams and CC Creams

Learn the ABCs about the latest beauty trend of these multi-tasking, all-in-one creams, and why they may not be all they’re cracked up to be.

We’ve always known Marie and other pioneers in the natural beauty industry were way ahead of their time. Long before BB creams, and now CC creams, became a mega beauty trend, those in the know--like Marie--were formulating nutritive skin care that brought out skin’s natural beauty and radiance.

Marie has never believed in quick fixes, beauty trends, or embraced the beauty industry’s advertising assault on anti-aging. Skin cells simply don’t work that way. Natural skin care addresses the challenges of aging skin— from wrinkles and sagging to dehydration and hyperpigmentation -- at the source, working from the inside out rather than the outside in.

Allow us to introduce you to the real world of multi-tasking skin care that replenishes, protects and repairs--where ingredients are selected to penetrate deep within the skin, working exactly where the skin’s natural beauty originates. These products are formulated without toxic ingredients, harmful chemicals, artificial agents and preservatives that do more harm than good.

The ABCs of BB + CC Creams

The Multi-Tasker: BB Creams

The truth is BB creams are not as new as the beauty industry would like you to believe. Originally formulated in Germany in the 1960’s as a post cosmetic surgery protection balm, BB creams didn’t catch on until circa 2000, when skin care companies and beauty trendsetters in Asia started raving about new products on the market dubbed “beauty balms” or “blemish balms.”

Touted as more advanced than their original predecessors, this second generation of BB creams goes beyond simple blemish control to multi-tasking, all-in-one creams that brighten, protect and repair skin. BB creams found on the market today claim to be a foundation, sunscreen, moisturizer and anti-aging treatment wrapped into a simple cream you apply after cleansing.

Beyond BB: CC Creams

CC creams are sort of a big sister to BB creams in that they are said to provide the additional benefits of more coverage, color correction and skin nourishing ingredients. Think BB cream with super powers.

CC creams are also formulated to address specific skin issues, including hyper pigmentation, wrinkles, sun spots, and blotchiness.

The Latest Trend -- A More Effective and Natural Alternative to BB and CC Creams

"While BB and CC creams appear to be the answer to every busy woman’s beauty dreams--skin care that’s a one-stop shop for healthy, radiant skin--take care when shopping as everything that glitters might not be gold."

Effective Anti-Aging at the Source

Creams: A Harsh Reality
Creams are mostly waxes and water, with a few oils thrown in. Waxes form an occlusive layer on the skin, which helps to hold moisture in. There are two downsides to waxes: wax build up may lead to clogged pores, and the wax barrier may prevent the oil component of the cream (the part of the product that actually benefits skin) from penetrating. This is likely the reason why creams typically deliver a higher level of diminishing results over time. They will work at first because they help to initially hold in moisture, but as time goes on the wax barricade may prevent oils from delivering nutrients, like essential fatty acids, to the skin.

Nutritive, Essential Oils
Natural, effective skin care should deliver a blend of hard-working plant oils and saturated fats that together deliver powerful anti- aging benefits to your skin. Besides maintaining the integrity of the lipid barrier, oils inhibit peroxidative and oxidative damage. The reason you should care about that is, in one word, wrinkles. Upon contact with light, lipids will undergo what is known as peroxidation. These peroxidized lipids lose their barrier ability and gaps occur in the lipid matrix, resulting in a loss of skin resilience and the formation of wrinkles.

Safe, Natural Sun Protection

One of the benefit claims of BB and CC creams is the added anti-aging prevention of sun protection. Sun protection, everyday rain or shine, is a worthy benefit and one of the best anti-aging prevention steps you can take. Unfortunately, most BB and CC creams do not provide safe, natural sun protection.

High SPF Does Not Mean Better Protection
While many BB and CC creams claim the benefits of higher SPF levels, in most cases this does not mean better sun protection. On the contrary, higher SPF ratings can be misleading, tempting you to stay in the sun too long, not apply enough and incur skin damage not immediately visible. In addition, higher SPF does not necessarily mean broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection which is essential for the best sun protection possible.

Non-Nano Zinc Oxide is Best
Most products with sun protection, including BB and CC creams, are titanium dioxide based. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) and natural beauty thought leaders agree that non-nano zinc oxide is the most effective, safest sun protection available. Titanium dioxide acts like chemical absorbers such as oxybenzone and octyl methoxycinnamate, rather than a physical blocker. Zinc oxide, on the other hand, is a physical sunblock that works by scattering and reflecting UV light rather than by absorbing it. This makes zinc oxide more stable, allowing it to protect the skin more effectively across a broader spectrum than titanium dioxide, without generating free radicals.

Use Care When Selecting BB and CC Creams: Ingredients Matter

"Science tells us that what goes on your skin ultimately penetrates your skin and goes into your body. The right ingredients can do a world of good and the wrong ones quite the opposite. When shopping for BB and CC creams, be mindful of ingredients, rather than claims of results. You don’t have to settle to get results."

1,4 Dioxane
Often not listed in ingredients, Dioxane is a by-product of the ethoxylation process used during the manufacturing process for cleansing and moisturizing products. Dioxane is listed as a known carcinogen by the EWG and is readily absorbed into your skin.

Synthetic Fragrances
Companies are not required to reveal the chemicals that make up synthetic fragrance, which can include hundreds of ingredients including phthalates (a known hormone disruptor). Unless a product’s label specifies essentials oils, fragrances should be avoided in all cosmetics.

Creams that provide color correction, skin brightening and lightening, likely contain hydroquinine--a chemical deemed by the EWG as hazardous. Hydroquinine inhibits the production of skin pigmentation, making it popular for treating melasma, freckles, age spots and other skin discolorations.

Parabens are preservatives (including methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl parabens), are used in cosmetics to extend their shelf life. As reported by the EWG, parabens can be absorbed through the skin and are known to be hormone disruptors, and have also been linked to breast cancer.

Brightening, Sheer Coverage with Anti-Aging Benefits and Safe Sun Protection

Everyday Sheer Coverage

Recommended for all skin types, Everyday Sheer Coverage SPF 20 is the only UVA/UVB sunscreen made with 16.6 % non-nano zinc oxide that you’ll love wearing every day. That’s because we carefully choose ingredients that are safe, effective and cosmetically appealing so you’re willing to put it on, rain or shine.

Non-nano zinc oxide protects against the full UV spectrum, UVA as well as UVB. It works by reflecting UV rays rather than absorbing them. And, it’s highly stable, unlike the chemicals found in most sunscreen which can generate free radicals that cause skin damage.

Pearl powder contains calcium carbonate and conchiolin, alternating layers of which create a pearl’s luster. Its light reflective qualities also make it ideal for cosmetic foundations where a lustrous finish is desired. Reflected light makes skin appear brighter, dark circles appear less dark and wrinkles appear shallower.

Oat Beta glucans are polysaccarides known for their ability to penetrate deeply, delivering significant anti-aging benefits because they moisturize at deeper layers of the skin.

Everyday Sheer Coverage is also formulated with the following skin nourishing ingredients: green & white tea, broccoli seed oil, cherry kernel seed oil, emu oil, pomegranate seed oil, red raspberry seed oil, vitamin E, yangu oil, beta glucans, coffee fruit extract, silk powder, rose essential oil, neroli essential oil, helichrysum essential oil, and cistus essential oil.

Red raspberry seed oil has natural sun protective properties and helps to prevent sun damage. It was the subject of a study published in 2000 that showed that it could help prevent rash, eczema, and other skin lesions, and had superior anti-inflammatory properties. Raspberry seed oil also showed the potential to act as a broad-spectrum UV-shield due to its high anthocyanin content. Finally, research is suggesting that the antioxidants in raspberries are effective in slowing the effects of aging, both inside and out.

Green tea/white tea infusion imparts extra sun protection and anti-aging benefits, thanks to high levels of antioxidants, polyphenols and catechins.

MVO Everyday Coverage is also formulated with the following skin nourishing ingredients: green& white tea, jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil, meadowfoam seed oil, sunflower oil, emu oil, Vitamin E, vegetable glycerin, red palm oil, red raspberry seed oil, sea buckthorn oil, yangu oil, rosemary oleoresin, pearl powder, carrot seed essential oil, cistus essential oil, and helichrysum essential oil.
